North West England’s aerospace sector has long been recognised as one of Europe’s leading industrial clusters and a model for development both within aerospace and in other areas of industry. The region’s aerospace sector drives the UK’s aerospace economy, employing more skilled people and generating more overseas income than any other region. The UK aerospace industry is the world’s second largest with a turnover of £18.6 billion, with North West aerospace companies contributing nearly £7 billion per annum, accounting for a third of the UK’s turnover in this sector.
The North West boasts a large number of major players in the aerospace industry including BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce.
There are also a number of smaller specialist companies that play a vital role in both equipping our armed forces and generating high quality jobs at the leading edge of technology. It is estimated that there are almost 1,000 companies associated with aerospace in the North West, employing over 50,000 people, approximately 4.5 per cent of the regional employment figures.
The regions aerospace industry also has strong links into other key sectors throughout the North West such as the automotive, chemical, environmental and medical/pharmaceutical industries. The transfer of aerospace technology and innovation through these inter-industry links, highlights the important contribution the aerospace sector makes to the region’s competition position.
The North West region has always been a leader in the development and application of new aerospace technologies and has a strong reputation for innovation.
