Vietnam & Singapore - North West Market Visit (Multi-Sector)
North West companies operating across a broad range of sectors are invited to apply to take part in a market visit to Vietnam and Singapore between 31 October - 8 November 2008. Find out more from Sue Dale.

The UKTI Advanced Engineering Team, is organising through the SBAC, a number of aerospace outward missions between September 2008 and March 2009.
The outward missions will visit the following markets and will exploit the opportunities outlined below:

Japan, 29 September-3 October 2008. The mission will visit Japan Aerospace in Yokohama, Japan's major aerospace show that takes place every 4 years. The programme will include a seminar and networking event. The mission will be a good follow-up to the UKTI Japan Aerospace Conference that was held in 2007;
Brazil, 24-27 November 2008. This mission will focus on Embraer procurement opportunities relating to the C390 military transport plane and business jet platforms. It will be a good follow-up to the Embraer presentations that took place across the UK in April 2008;
USA, late January 2009 (date to be confirmed). Mission to Wichita, Kansas, focusing on the business jet cluster that includes companies such as Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft and Spirit;
India, 11-15 February 2009. Mission to Bangalore to visit the major Indian aerospace show Aero India. There are also options to visit MRO companies in Mumbai and avionics companies in Hyderabad. This will be a good follow-up to the UKTI Advanced Engineering event that took place in India in May 2008 that included an associated aerospace mission to Bangalore;
Canada, 16-19 March 2009.  This mission will focus on procurement opportunities flowing from the Bombardier C Series programme.
These missions all flow from market analysis work that the SBAC Market Development Board, with UKTI support, carried out in 2007. They are a unique opportunity to exploit supply chain opportunities arising from major aerospace programmes by OEMs in these markets and to begin potentially long-term business relationships.
UKTI's intention is to follow up all these missions with further events in the markets or in the UK.
For further information on how you can participate in these missions, please contact

US Export Control Complaince Workshops: 8th - 11th September
2 x two day workshops

Beginners Workshop - These are typically geared to the newcomer to dealing with US export control compliance. The target conference attendee has less than one year of experience in this niche area. These conferences provide basic "how to" information on filling out and submitting requests for export authorizations (e.g., DSP-5s, 61s, 73s, 85s, and technical assistance, manufacturing, and warehouse and distribution agreements.)

Advanced Workshop - These are targeted to the exporter with one to five years of experience. While there is some "how to" information provided at these conferences, it is typically focused on more complex issues as opposed to completing and submitting forms. Some typical topics would be licensing of more complex programs, such as when an agreement is appropriate versus a license, and how to use exemptions in exporting "defense articles".

There are two venues accommodating these workshops, the first two at a venue in Leeds and the second two in London. Full details of these venues will only be disclosed to those who register, but both are centrally located.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency with the support of the North West Aerospace Alliance is proposing two short targeted missions to Continental Europe to make contact and develop sales opportunities with a number of companies in the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

SWITZERLAND
RUAG  is a major sub-assembly manufacturer for Airbus as well as a subcontractor for numerous companies in the military field. JET Aviation is one of the major business aviation service and support providers in Europe. Pilatus are the only aircraft manufacturer in Switzerland with a range of very successful turbo-prop business aircraft.
Many opportunities exist for North West companies in the supply chain of these companies.
All the companies are known to the British Embassy in Berne and RUAG was one of the participants in a recent composites inward delegation to the UK organised by the Embassy and UKTI which included visits to North West companies and to the North West Composites Centre at Manchester University.

A mini mission is tentatively scheduled for October 2008 and would last three days, with one night in Lucerne and one night in Basel.
Cost:
Companies will pay their own flight and transfer costs and discounted rates will be negotiated for hotel accommodation in Lucerne and Basel. A group research report will be commissioned for the Embassy support in arranging meetings and the visit programme – and costs will be shared amongst the companies
 - but there will be no UK administration costs. Eligible North West companies can apply for an NWDA
Sector Mission Grant of £200.

OSTRAVA
The Central European Aircraft Maintenance facility at Ostrava in north-eastern Czech Republic will host its first aircraft for maintenance in June 2008. The facility is brand new and promises to be a major Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the region.
A few UK companies have already had some engagement with CEAM, but wider opportunities should exist for other companies within the North West to develop relationships with the new operation. We are therefore planning to
travel to Ostrava in order to meet up with departmental managers and technical managers from CEAM as well as senior directors.
The proposal has received support from both Czech Invest and from the Regional Development Agency of Moravia who both believe that substantial opportunities exist for joint venture or partnership activities in the region linked to the regrowth of the aerospace industry in the area.
In addition, there will also be an opportunity to make contact with representatives from Ostrava airport
 (
http://www.airport-ostrava.cz) who would be keen to discuss possible co-operation in the development of the airport. At the moment, they have only two regular routes (Vienna and Prague) but they have big expansion plans.The mini mission is tentatively scheduled for  early November, lasting two or three days
(one or two nights) depending on the availability of flights.
Cost:
Companies will pay their own flight costs and discounted rates will be negotiated for hotel
accommodation in Ostrava. A group research report will be commissioned jointly by all
participating companies for the Embassy support in organising meetings and the visit programme,
and the costs shared between the companies - but there will be no UK administration costs.
Eligible North West based companies can apply for an NWDA Market Visit Grant of £250.

The Export Group for Aerospace & Defence (EGAD),
the dedicated UK national industrial body dealing
with export control issues, is organising 2 x two
day workshops around the UK during the week of 8th
September 2008, in association with the US Society
of International Affairs (SIA), on US Export Controls,
and how UK companies are affected by them. These
are aimed at practitioners on the practicalities
of how you go about complying with the US regulations
(both ITAR and EAR), and will be of interest to any
UK firms who have any dealings with the USA, or
controlled US technology/goods, either in the defence
or the dual-use sectors.
Monday 8th – Tuesday 9th September: LEEDS
Wednesday 10th – Thursday 11th September: CENTRAL LONDON

The time structure for these workshops will be to have an
absolute beginner’s workshop on Monday 8th September and
Wednesday 10th September, which will provide delegates
with a "Back to Basics" view, aimed at the total novices
who completely new to the subject.
On the 2nd day of each two day workshop (ie Tuesday 9th
September in Leeds and Thursday 11th September in London)
there will be a more advanced workshop, which is more
detailed for those who already are fairly familiar with
the US regulations, but have some specific queries about
practical compliance issues that they may have come across.
These events are a continuation of the generally highly
successful series of similar workshops which EGAD has
previously run in collaboration with the SIA in October
2005 and October 2006.
If you have any queries, or which to register your
interest in any of these events, please contact:
