The North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA) were delighted to hear the news at Farnborough International Airshow 2018 that the UK would bring its enviable array of skills and technology together, in Team Tempest, to develop and manufacture Britain’s next generation and world beating fighter jet. As such, the theme of our NWAA Annual General Meeting and Winter Members Forum which took place on Monday 3rd December 2018 at the Hallmark Hotel in Leyland, Preston was “The Future of the UK Defence Sector”. We had two fantastic keynote presentations; the first from BAE Systems leading the Team Tempest consortium, and the second from the UK Defence Solution Centre who are mandated to help UK companies expand their activities in the global defence markets.

NWAA were incredibly excited to announce that our members had the first opportunity to learn more about Team Tempest from Andrew Kennedy, Head of Strategy for BAE Systems - Air. The United Kingdom’s Defence Secretary, Gavin Williamson MP, launched “Team Tempest” with £2 billion ($2.6 billion) of funding for initial development at the Farnborough Air Show this summer – which, along with the publication of the Combat Air Strategy signalled the intent that the UK intends to remain a world leader in Combat Air. The development of world leading technologies to ensure the UK remains a global leader is being led by a consortium known as "Team Tempest," consisting of major defence contractor BAE Systems who are leading the development with the UK Ministry of Defence, with Rolls Royce contributing engines, MBDA Missile Systems developing weapons, and Leonardo developing sensors and avionics. The stated intent of the government is for the system to enter service in the mid-2030s and will eventually take over the role currently delivered by Typhoon.

In an event themed around a vital defence sector, NWAA members also heard from Tony Smith, Head of Innovation – Air and Space for the UK Defence Solution Centre. The UKDSC is a potential partner for NWAA members looking to expand their activities in the global defence market. SMEs are a major source of future innovation and UKDSC has a unique network of relationships, insights, and a UK Government mandate to help connect your innovations with real market solutions. Navigating the sheer volume of opportunities within the UK defence market is complex and expensive. UKDSC can help NWAA members find the right opportunities by understanding your business and facilitating your offer.
