NWAA member, Silcoms, the UK’s leading supplier of machined aero-engine rings has taken delivery of a Hermele C50 UMT, mill/turn. It is one of the company’s largest ever capital investments at a list price of £750,000. The machine will be used to manufacture 1.3 metre diameter titanium rotating seals for Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 and Trent 7000 engines.
Full five axis milling and turning capability will enable much shorter through put times and quicker cycles, by combining operations, removing set ups and reducing the number of manual interventions.
The investment is part of Silcoms strategic aim of staying at the forefront of machining capability and technology for complex, large diameter, thin wall aero-engine rings.
Silcoms is also enrolled on the SC21 Competitiveness and Growth improvement programme with the NWAA. The scheme focuses on sustained improvement in four areas namely, strategy and management systems, NPI, manufacturing operations and supply chain.
