The NWAA & STFC - Daresbury
The North West Science Strategy clearly identifies the importance of developing the regional aerospace industry into a world-class supply chain. Through the NWAA ASCE Programme 1, the aerospace companies now understand the primes’ requirements. However, considerable effort is still required to effectively communicate and implement the science and technology vision of the primes through the National Aerospace Strategies. The NWAA has embedded innovation into its second supply chain development programme with a view to create a highly competitive, knowledge-based and close-coupled cluster. A process for collaboration and knowledge transfer between OEMs, SMEs, HEIs, Science Parks and Business Support Organisations is being developed and exploitation of emerging technologies from centres such as Daresbury actively sought.
Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus is one of the seven sites the Science Technology and Facilities Council (STFC) runs in the UK. With a budget of over £650 million and 2,200 staff, the STFC is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations supporting scientists and engineers worldwide and providing strategic advice to the UK government. The STFC has a number of world-class, large scale research facilities which are regularly accessed by the aerospace industry including Synchrotron Radiation, Supercomputing, Neutron Science and the Space Science and Technology facilities.
