NEW RECYCLING CENTRE TO SAVE OVER £2M A YEAR ON ENERGY COSTS
Worksop-based Levercor Energy Systems was appointed by the owners of a new £20m recycling centre in the East Midlands to install a 5.4MW combined heat and power system (CHP), comprising three 1.8MW units, which will deliver annual savings of over £2m.
Along with the provision of low cost electricity, with the integration of absorption chillers the CHPs will also provide cooling for this 12,500 sq m closed-loop recycling centre.
At full capacity the centre is expected to process 38,000 tonnes of waste plastic every year and will help to significantly expand the UK’s plastics recycling infrastructure and increase the rates of recycling — in 2024 it was estimated by Defra that around 53% of plastic packaging waste was recycled (little changed from the previous year: at just over 52%).
Commenting on the new installation, Levercor Energy Systems’ CEO, Joe Anwyl, said: “With energy becoming increasingly expensive, adding to the financial pressures of UK manufacturers, CHPs continue to play a vital role in providing a secure and reliable source of low cost and low CO2 electricity.
“This latest project will save our client over £2m a year, which will not only help boost profitability, but will ensure that the company continues to invest and innovate in this increasingly important sector.”
