Why the Christmas Party Still Matters

By Celia Gaze, Founder and CEO of The Wellbeing Farm

When did the Christmas party become something businesses felt they had to justify?

We’ll spend money on software, recruitment, consultancy, training, strategy days and subscriptions we’ve forgotten we even signed up for.

Yet when it comes to getting the team together at Christmas, suddenly we ask whether it’s “really necessary”.

I’d argue that it is.

Not because people need another turkey dinner, are desperate to wear a Christmas jumper, or because the world needs another awkward office buffet.

The real value is connection.

For businesses in engineering, aerospace and manufacturing, teams can be spread across departments, shifts, buildings and multiple sites. People can work for the same company for years and barely know each other.

Take people out of the workplace and something interesting happens. Job titles fade a little. Hierarchy softens. Finance chats to operations. The MD discovers one of the engineers has considerably better dance moves than expected.

People laugh, talk properly and build relationships.

Those relationships come back to work in January. They make conversations easier, collaboration stronger and organisations more human.

People also want to feel appreciated.

A Christmas celebration gives leaders the opportunity to say something incredibly simple: thank you.

Thank you for working hard, solving problems, dealing with difficult customers, impossible deadlines and those projects that somehow became urgent at 4.47pm on a Friday.

That matters.

We talk endlessly about workplace culture, but culture isn’t what’s written on the wall. It’s what people experience.

Do they feel valued? Included? Connected? Do leaders spend time with their teams? Do people actually enjoy being together?

A Christmas party won’t fix a poor culture, but it can reinforce a good one. Moments become stories, and stories become culture.

There’s a commercial benefit too. People work better with people they know. Strong relationships create better communication and trust, while a positive employee experience helps businesses attract and retain great people.

Nobody stays in a job purely because they had a brilliant Christmas party, but people absolutely remember how a company made them feel.

So perhaps the question isn’t, “Can we afford a Christmas party?”

Maybe it’s, “How do we want our people to feel at the end of this year?”

At The Wellbeing Farm in Lancashire, we create Christmas parties for businesses that want something memorable, relaxed and a little different. Think great food, music, dancing and, quite possibly, llamas wearing bow ties, while also choosing a purpose-led B Corp venue with sustainability and social impact built into the experience.

If “sort Christmas party” is still sitting on someone’s to-do list, we’d love to help.
