Sustainability plays an important part in today’s aerospace industry. Here, Jerrod Hartley, CEO of Airframe Designs, explains the company’s initiative to commit to NetZero.

Airframe Designs is stepping up its commitment to becoming a sustainable manufacturer with a series of environmental initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint.

We have signed up to the Race to Zero, via the SME Climate Hub, which also gives us the responsibility to sustain the efforts we have already undertaken.

The agreement with the Climate Hub says: “By committing to reduce your emissions through the SME Climate Hub, you will be counted in the UN Climate Change High Level Champions’ Race to Zero campaign.”

Meanwhile, we have already increased the number of solar panels to generate energy for our site in Blackpool from 80 to 150 panels, increasing the battery storage capacity from 22.5 kilowatts to 37.5 kilowatts.

At the same time, we have committed to a new waste process to ensure all refuse is recycled at our recently expanded site.

The PLA polymer used by Airframe Designs in the 3D printing process is also being recycled into PLA filament for re-use in the manufacturing process.

As we expand, so we are structuring our reduction in carbon proportionately to ensure we never lose sight of our goal.

The energy we generate from the solar panels is enough to run our engineering operation, and we are seeking efficiencies across all of our site. These incremental initiatives all help towards our longer term plans of being a sustainable business contributing to carbon reduction and NetZero.

We are committed to this goal as we seek to contribute to the aerospace industry’s ambitions which stand at 15 per cent carbon reduction by 2030, 40 per cent by 2040, and achieving NetZero by 2050.

In accreditations, we have successfully achieved the ISO 14001 certification in environmental management after a rigorous assessment of waste management, use of resources and efficiency. The ISO 14001 accreditation is an internationally-recognised standard which validates a company’s commitments to regulatory environmental requirements in the way it operates its business.

In progressing our Green credentials, we work together as a team to ensure we are all in this together. The journey is shared, and that means we all move along together. This is the Airframe way.
