Boosting productivity & creating a cleaner, safer working environment – Aerospace Case Study

Kernouw-Oils-Syntilo

In part 6 of our Aerospace series of case studies we look at a large US aerospace engine manufacturer using heavy-duty, chlorinated neat oils across 3 of its plans to broach difficult to machine alloys. It’s aim was to create a safe working environment, speed up production and cut down on waste disposal. After moving to Castrol Syntilo 9954 for a trial period machining RAM speeds increased by more than 35ft/min with a decreased stroke time of 15 seconds. On top of this, hazardous side effects were eliminated and productivity improved.

Read the case study summary to see how moving to Castrol Syntilo 9954 achieved these figures.

Background

A large US manufacturer was seeking an alternative to its existing fluid, in a bid to create a safer working environment, speed up production and cut down on waste disposal. It was recommended they switch to using Castrol Syntilo® 9954. After making the conversion, machining speeds increased, hazardous side effects were eliminated and productivity improved.

Challenge

The case study subject is a large US aerospace engine manufacturer. It was using heavy-duty, chlorinated neat oils across three of its plants to broach a variety of difficult-to-machine alloys. These included Hastelloy, Inconel, Rene, and various stainless steels.

The client wanted to avoid the disposal and environmental issues associated with traditional neat oils and gain more throughput with faster cut times.

It was also keen to improve working conditions, eliminating the excess mist and related health and safety issues.

Solution

After a thorough evaluation, Castrol Syntilo® 9954 was recommended – a high-performance synthetic cutting and grinding fluid ideal for machining and grinding of ferrous metals.

Castrol Syntilo® 9954 is proven to reduce overall production costs while satisfying the most critical machining requirements. And, as a clean, water based fluid, it enables manufacturers to avoid some of the more unpleasant side effects associated with neat oils.

Outcome

The client was delighted with the results. The product’s unique combination of surfactant technologies increased lubrication, allowing faster cutting speeds, resulting in greater parts throughput and reduced cycle times. The broach life also increased, providing more parts per regrind and longer uptime. Thanks to its low-foaming properties, excessive misting was eliminated and HSE and operator acceptance increased.

Since making the switch to Castrol Syntilo® 9954, the client has saved money on tooling and disposal costs, boosted productivity, and created cleaner, safer working environment.
